Essential Content
A class visit to the Sydney Jewish Museum has the potential to provide significant support to the development of students' English skills in reading, writing, listening to, reflecting on and viewing a variety of texts in an area of personal interest. Teachers are provided with background information relating to the Holocaust, and members of the Museum education staff are able to prepare relevant and Stage and Outcomes appropriate work sheets, in consultation with the school, to fit with students' class work in fiction, poetry, film, non-fiction and drama.

Additional Content
A visit to the Sydney Jewish Museum will provide the opportunity to "progress beyond the essential content (of the Syllabus) in order to broaden and deepen (the students') skills, knowledge and understanding and to extend their interest in English".

Students are encouraged to respond to material presented in the exhibitions by
  • Composing extended imaginative, interpretive and critical texts based on prior and subsequent investigation and/or wider reading
  • Applying the knowledge and understanding they gained from their visit to the Museum to investigate and consider a variety of texts through:
         a)   Undertaking a study of the media representation of the Holocaust
         b)   Undertaking the study of a fiction or non fiction genre pertaining to the
               Holocaust
Life Skills: Outcomes and Content
Member of the Museum staff are available to assist teachers in tailoring the content of the excursion to the selected outcomes of the student's Individual Education Plan.
