Rose Schäffer was born in Egypt to Hungarian parents in 1935. She received this bolero, featuring Hungarian Gypsy handiwork, from her aunt in Hungary before she perished in the Holocaust. Following the establishment of the State of Israel in 1948, Rose and her family were forced to leave their home. After living as stateless refugees for two years, they immigrated to Australia. The vest is one of the few possessions they managed to take with them.
