This drawing, with a personal message written on the reverse, was one of several birthday greetings made for Jacqueline Feldman on the occasion of her 14th birthday on 18 January 1945.
The drawings were made by children living with Jacqueline and her younger brother, Charles Feldman, in the Catholic Orphanage and Children's Home in the town of Castera Verduzan, located in the Haute Pyrrenees region of France. Six Jewish children, including Jaqueline and Charles, were hidden by the Jewish organisation Oeuvre de Secours aux Enfants among the 50 or so children in the Home, with the knowledge of the orphanage director. Many of the other children were orphans from the Spanish Civil War.
The children’s messages inside these cards wish Jacqueline a happy birthday with love. Many express hope that she be reunited with her parents, so that next year they can celebrate her birthday together.
