Identification Card of Ada Schnek

This Austrian internal travel identification card (kennkarte) belonged to Ada Schnek. It reflects the discriminatory Nazi policy begun in 1938 to single out Jewish people in government-issued identification documents. All Jewish kennkarte’s were stamped with ‘J’. The middle name ‘Sara’ was imposed on every Jewish woman to ensure that her name was recognisably Jewish (‘Israel’ was used for men).
