Yahrzeit Light

Pauline Edwards’ family used this Phillips glass bulb with a double Star of David throughout her childhood in Sydney. It is a memorial lamp, or Yahrzeit light (traditionally a candle), which is lit to commemorate a loved one’s death. According to custom, close family members light the Yahrzeit candle or bulb during the seven-day mourning period after a relative’s death, as well as on important religious occasions throughout the year. When Pauline passed away, her Catholic friend Thelma remembered this Yahrzeit custom and donated the lamp to the Sydney Jewish Museum in her memory.
