Chai to Life

Chai to Life
The Sum of my Roots

Rita Prager grew up in South America, feeling different from her classmates. Her parents spoke to each other in Hungarian and even the food they ate was different and had strange names.
As an adult now living in Sydney, working at the Sydney Jewish Museum, she slowly started putting the pieces of her family story together. The journey of self discovery for Rita, a second generation Holocaust Survivor, culminated in her reclaiming her lost family and at last, understanding what had happened to her parents and extended family in Hungary as a result of the war.
This is an account of how a family moved forward and thrived after the devastation of Hitler’s Europe; first from Hungary to Uruguay, then to Chile and finally to Australia to celebrate 60 years of Liberation.
For Rita, the imperative to retrace her roots has been a life affirming celebration of the resilience of the human spirit.
