The Sydney Jewish Museum provides a vehicle through which the course Rationale can be realized.

English (Standard)- Preliminary and HSC
"The Preliminary and HSC English (Standard) courses provide diverse approaches to texts so that students may become flexible and critical thinkers, capable of appreciating the variety of cultural heritages and differences that make up Australian society."

Areas of Study, Focuses, Texts and Electives: The Syllabus defines an Area of Study as "the exploration of a concept that affects our perceptions of ourselves and our world". The concepts that inform the aims of the SJM have particular applications to the concerns of the Syllabus. SJM staff will work with teachers to ensure that the Museum visit provides opportunities to see the texts studied in their wider applications and specific Syllabus focus.

English (Advanced) Course: Module 3- Elective 3, History and Memory
The Sydney Jewish Museum focus on Holocaust history and its unique resource of guides, who are themselves survivors of the Holocaust, make it a prime resource for study and further exploration of recommended texts. Students are given a first hand experience of the intersection between history and memory as they examine the historical artifacts of the Museum while hearing the personal memories of the survivor guides. This experience will particularly enhance study of the Film: Benigni, Roberto Life is Beautiful, Roadshow, 1999 and Non-Fiction: Baker Mark Raphael, The Fiftieth Gate, Flamingo, 1997 (HSC 2001-2003) . The Fiftieth Gate, Harper Collins, 1997, ISBN 0732258049, is also listed for this Elective for the Higher School Certificate 2004-2005.

Common Content of Standard and Advanced Courses: Area of Study: The Journey: Focus: Inner Journeys: Recommended Film for Higher School Certificate 2004 and 2005: Benigni Roberto, Life is Beautiful, Roadshow, 1999.

English Extension: The Preliminary and HSC English Extension courses enable particular students to "refine their understanding and appreciation of the cultural role and significance of texts." A structured visit to the Sydney Jewish Museum to support response to prescribed and recommended texts and/or student composition of texts will facilitate student achievement of the specified outcomes.
