"(History) is a key discipline through which students approach the world of words and ideas, the world of intelligent and literate discourse about the great issues that affect the common fate of humanity." - Rationale for Modern History in the Stage 6 Curriculum, Modern History Stage 6 Syllabus, Board of Studies NSW, 1999, p 7

The fundamental mandate of the Sydney Jewish Museum is to provide education concerning the Jewish experience of the Twentieth Century, specifically the Holocaust, in order to ensure that there will never again be a repetition of such events. As such the aims of the Museum have particular resonance with the Rationale for Modern History in the Stage 6 curriculum. Values and attitudes such as informed and active citizenship, concern for a just society, the influence of the past on the present and the future, and the contribution of historical studies to lifelong learning are inherent in the subject matter of Modern History Stage 6. The resources and collections of the Sydney Jewish Museum have direct relevance to the following topic areas in Modern History:

Preliminary Course
Part II: Preliminary Core Study – The world at the beginning of the twentieth century – Antisemitism

HSC Course Content
Members of the education staff at the Sydney Jewish Museum are available to structure content to provide a context for:

Part II – National Studies – Option E: Germany 1918-1945

A Museum visit is of great relevance and provides added depth to students' studies in this area.
  • Significant historiographical issues: A study of the displays and resources of the Sydney Jewish Museum contributes to student investigation of a variety of primary and secondary sources; the usefulness and reliability of the sources; recognition of the different perspectives and interpretations offered by the sources
  • Interaction with Museum Guides, many of whom are Holocaust Survivors, provide added depth to the students' study of the topic areas
