The resources and collections of the Sydney Jewish Museum support and enhance the Aims and Objectives of the History Syllabus. In particular, the exhibits and materials relating to the Australian Jewish experience, Jewish migration and the Holocaust have direct relevance to the following areas:Perspectives: Students are provided with religious and multicultural perspectives of specific historical events. Civics and Citizenship Education: School groups are taught a model lesson in citizenship by Museum Guides, many of whom are Holocaust survivors, who pay tribute to the individual rights and liberties we enjoy in democratic Australia.Site Studies: The Sydney Jewish Museum can be used as site study to lead into the study of focus issues, topics or areas of study or as a means to highlight or emphasise them. Research Skills: Investigation of specific themes provides students with opportunities to develop research skills. Students are welcome to use the resources of the Museum Library. In specific instances and depending on the topics chosen for research, Museum guides may be available, by appointment, for discussion and interview. Values and Attitudes: Consistent with the Values and Attitudes of the Syllabus, a visit to the Jewish Museum will reinforce commitment to informed and active citizenship; commitment to a just society; an appreciation of the study of history; empathetic understanding; commitment to lifelong learning. Topic 1 Introducing History: Treated as a discrete topic, the Sydney Jewish Museum as a site study can lead students to an understanding of aspects of historiography.Topic 5 Optional Study: The Shaping of the Modern World. Museum staff can facilitate a program for the student visit, in consultation with teachers, which will highlight some aspect of this topic. Topic 5 Post War Australia to the 1970s: Citizenship and migrant AustraliansTopic 6 Social and Political Issues from the 1970s to the 1990s – Multiculturalism: Education staff can assist teachers in developing content materials and worksheets to highlight the contribution of Jewish migrants to Australia's cultural and economic development. Topic 2 The Modern World: Genocide and Racism.
